In Reply to: help with hibernation temps please? posted by peterUK on October 15, 2000 at 16:33:24:
: hi! i've got a pair of melanurus that i've just started to lower the temperature on and i was just wondering what temperatures you guys would recommend i lower them to and for how long? thanks in advance.
Although I find melanuras to not like a very high temp (I keep my 7' male at about 75F)
they don't hibernate, they come from central and south america and its too warm for
them to hibernate. As far as breeding (no experience on my part) there is, I believe, a
slight cooling period to get them to breed. I have heard of some north american colubrids
being hibernated in refrigerators during the winter months, but I can't imagine why one
would want to, however, in the wild hibernating herps live longer, I guess because if they
are safe in a den asleep, there is less chance of them being killed by predators, and the
metabolism slows down perhaps leading to a physiological advantage over the aging
process. A melanuras would probably die if dropped to temps that an eastern or texas
could survive.
Hope to be of any help and I'm not an expert,
Roy
