:resently our local herp shop got in a few texas round tail horny toads, they said that they do very well in captivity and don't need to eat ants at all. I was told that they need ants for acid and such things. I would like one as a pet and have plenty of room on the desert side of my herp room, the temps are hight and dry. But if they need ants well then i dont think i can make that comitment and will just forget about it.
:Phrynosoma modestum, the Roundtail Horned Lizard requires ants in their diet just like all horned lizards require ants. The Roundtail horned lizard is an egg layer and the average clutch is 10 eggs. Stomach content analysis indicates that 86% of their diet is ants. Scat analysis indicates 88% ants in the diet. Tell the folks at the pet store to get educated about the animals they sell. If they do not want to get educated, then they do not belong in business. Lester G. Milroy III
