Don't know about cottons, but I used to find timbers in the Blue Ridge and Appalachians all the time. You're not too far away from there either, maybe 100 miles or so. Like the other guy said, they are protected, but pretty easy to find if you look in the right spots. If you get up in the mountainous area, look for BIG fallen trees. I've found them under the logs and in the hole torn up by the roots. This is quite commonly near streams and floods are what downed the trees. Bear in mind that you gotta find some true wilderness to find trees and streams like this so be careful because its a LONG way to treatment if you get bit or break a bone or need stitches. Native trout streams are generally pretty good, especially those that don't have many cars or people around.
