Well, I play tennis on Sunday and I was a little early so I stopped at a place on the way to look under a board. I had seen kingsnakes and rattlesnakes there before. It is in Southern California. I looked under board by lifting up lower left corner and saw a gopher snake. I was going to pick it up to look at it when I saw a rattle under middle right side of board. I put the board down and a juvenile rattlesnake had crawled up onto board and was poised, 12 inches from my right leg to strike. Adreneline rush and heart surge. I jumped back, walked away to the sound of rattling. I felt stupid that I had exposed myself to this danger. This was not Disneyland with a seatbelt. It was real. I know everyone reading this wears gloves, knee high boots, uses a snake hook to lift boards and employs all other reasonable safeguards. You are smarter than I am. Careful out there. You never know!
