In Reply to: The Official Standard of Corn Snake Morphology... posted by Serpwidgets on August 02, 2002 at 00:04:30:
OK, so now we have a good idea...we need to implement it. I like Kat's suggestion as far as the divisions go. I also like the K.I.S.S. suggestion (keep it simple, stupid). Kathy and Bill Love already have the "Bible" of corn snakes when it comes to pics and information as far as I'm concerned and I can't wait to get the new copy, but I like the idea of a short, simple yearly or every-other-year guide listing the generally accepted morphs, along with descriptions, genetic 'recipe', etc.
Perhaps we should just start with a text only version for the last part of this year just to get it down. Get the known recessive genes listed, combos listed, heritable patterns listed, and odd balls listed along with what we know about them.
We could set up the combo section with the entry on each type under the combo of genes necessary to form the animal. For the common name, we put 'see xxx+xxx'.
For example, the main entry for butter is under
Amelanism + Caramel: blah blah blah enter text here blah blah
and other entries of known 'aliases' simply refer to that entry
Butter: see Amelanism + Caramel
We could set it up with entries divided into sections at the beginning (polygenic traits and phases, simple recessive genetic traits, multiple genetic combinations, others) and have a glossery at the end set up much like a dictionary with quick definitions and referral notations to the appropriate listing.
I do not claim to be an expert on anything, but I am willing to put time into this project that is long overdo in coming about. I am willing to put together the first version of this guide unless someone else is going to step in and take up the task. I would say the best thing to do is form a small committee (anyone interested?) to put this first rough version together, say by Sept. 15th? (I have some time off right now to work on it.) I propose we then run it by the big guns for a read-through/suggestions/criticisms, etc. I am hoping if we get past the busiest part of the corn season, that they would have a little time to give it a read through.
As far as publication goes, how about if the first version is simply full sized paper folded in half with a cover and stapled. I would think that these could be provided to anyone requesting one for roughly cost + s&h. A couple bucks at the most.
Hey, it's a start anyway. What do you think?
