Mike

Infertility is no longer considered to be a realistic cause of egg-binding. It is more likely caused by inadequte calcium supplements, lack of an appropriate laying site and the tendency of well-fed captives to produce abnormally large clutches. Your girl has had eggs developing inside of her from the time that she was very small herself so starving her before mating will not affect her first clutch size. You are correct in the theory however that females kept on a more moderate diet do produce smaller, less physically taxing clutches. So you can affect the size of her following clutches through diet. By giving her a cooling down period of a few months you can also reduce the number of clutches per year. There is an excellent book called "Chameleons Their Care and Breeding" by Linda J. Davison that goes into further detail about that method. Good luck with your new girl, you are clearly smitten with her!
