I've done this with several enclosures and highly recommend it for species that would otherwise need large, hard to handle water bowls.

The big downfall is that they can be hard to rinse out thoroughly for those times you use a lot of disinfectant. For that reason alone it's best to have them plumbed in or at least high enough off the ground so you can run a flexible line from the drain to a sink, bathtub, etc.

They can be cleaned out with a shop-vac but I find that to be a lot of work and defeats the purpase of having a drain in the first place.
