Hi,
I'm having troubles maintaining consistent temps in my BRB rack using a slide dimmer to control 8' of 4" heat tape. I set the temps during the day and the warmest it reaches is 85 degrees on the warm side. But then at night it'll dip down to the low 70s on the warm side. Obviously the dimmer ignores the ambient temps in the room, so when its cooler in the room its cooler in the tank (like at night). I suppose I should be asking in the boa forum if such a cycle is acceptable.
I have an on off thermostat from Alife which currently isn't in use. I do not have the option of using the thermostat to just control a space heater, here in CA the energy bill just doesn't permit. But I could use the thermostat in series somehow with the dimmer so that the dimmed heat tape is on say 1/2 the time because of the thermostat during the day, and maybe 3/4 of the time at night because of the drop in temp.
I'm think that would just lead to even more fluctuations though. Anyone doing this with much success? I am planning on getting a digital proportional but not until february when I can afford it. I've heard good things about big apple herp, I'll probably get theres.
If anyone has any ideas or suggestions I'm all ears!
