Balls, in my opinion are a horrible beginner snake. The only reason they are portrayed as "beginner" snakes is because they are readily available and are usually docile. They will often go on hunger strikes for no reason and this is usually stressful for a newbie. I guess if you can handle your snake not eating for 6 months you could get a ball, but I would suggest a cornsnake.
