Between milksnakes and kingsnakes, I would choose the kingsnake; they tend to be a little larger at birth and slightly more phlegmatic when it comes to handling. For a child the age of your daughter, I would even recommend a rosy or rubber boa instead of anything from the Lampropeltis complex; colubrids in general are fast-moving snakes who will not hesitate to musk if scared, while boas tend to be slower and less easily startled.
Unfortunately I can't recommend breeders; I'm in Canada, and I believe such a thing is against the kingsnake.com TOS, but try looking on some of the forums at the people posting "new babies" - most of them effuse about the breeder they got it from, if it was a good experience. =)
Good luck with whatever you choose - and how cool a parent are you, teaching your daughter to learn first? ;)

:I realize this is a pretty frequently asked question, but I'll narrow mine down a bit. I'm a soon to be beginner, and I want to involve my 8 year old daughter in this venture, (she had expressed interest in snakes) and I'm trying to decide what would be a better snake to start out with: a milksnake (I like the Hondurans) or a kingsnake. I've read quite a few of the postings and suggestions to beginners. I was wondering what would be a more moderate sized, manageable snake between the two that my daughter and I could handle.
:Also: a related question> can anyone recommend a breeder? I've looked at quite a few of the web pages, For Goodness Snakes and Albino Tricolors in particular. Can anyone give a recommendation as to a reputable, reliabe dealer of kings/milks?
:Thanks for patience and advice in advance.
