In Reply to: New baby baby red tail boa is having a hissing fit! posted by Craig T on October 15, 2000 at 09:51:24:
: I just purchased my second boa, a 25 inch long Guyana Red Tail Boa and have had it at home just one full day. I tred to handle it today and it coils up and hisses violently at me! My question is, is this normal behavoir for young Red Tails and should I avoid handeling it for a few days or should I do the opposite and get him used to being handled? Thanks for any advice you can give. Craig
begin!! If you allow this snake to intimidate you at this stage(25 inches) then when he is a 5 footer he will prevent you from handleing him entirely. go in and handle him, but not 48 hrs after he has a meal. You didnt say if this snake was wildcaught, that makes a huge diffrence. Also watch the temps. if you go up in the 90's his temperament will get more testy. Pick him up 2-3 times a week. i have adult boas that do the same thing. once out of the cage they cease, but handle him NOW and don't wait till later.
