Basically the process starts out in the country of origin. The animals are either collected or farmed there.
The animals are then acquired by an exporter who must fill out the required paperwork to export the specific species to the US.
The exporter then ships to a US importer who normally is a wholesaler.
The wholesaler then wholesales to a retailer.
The retailer to the pet owner.
I could go on all day long about the details but each species is quite different in many respects.
The animals are normally shipped via airway to minimalize the shipping times. The collectors are normally paid very little, in respect to the final price paid by the pet owner.
The importation process has to ability to have many pitfalls along the way, but is normally handled effectively by most professionals.
