If it has a hinge on the back of the carapace it is one of the african hinge-back species. More than likely either Kinyxis homeana (Home's hinge-back) or Kinyxis belliana (Bell's hinge-back).

Try looking these two species up online to see if it matches up. There is plenty of information on these species available.
Try the tortoise trust website or California turtle and tortoise club site for care sheets.

If it is not a hinge-back, try to post a picture if you can. Another really common tortoise specie to find in pet stores these days is Testudo horsfieldi (known as the Russian, central Asian, or Horsfield's tortoise).
