Did it look something like the picture seen here? This is an American wood turtle (Clemmys insculpta).

Also, there's a geographical map of the United States at the World Chelonian Trust website which can help you narrow down what species are found in your area as well. Simply click on the species gallery and then the map via the WCT home page (link below).
