the best "rescue" you can do for this turtle is find out where your friend picked it up, and go return it to the wild. Keeping it in captivity is not a fair thing to do, and will not have a good chance of success given that this is an older animal, previously wounded, and it's close to hibernation time, meaning internal clocks will be telling them to stop eating and drinking and shut down for winter.... all bad things for captive turtles.
