:One possibility if it is not a garter snake is the buttermilk snake..a subspecies of black racer that occurs in your area & fits the description you gave. That would be Coluber constrictor anthicus. They are highly variable in color & pattern, so if you do find a picture & it's not an exact match, don't rule it out.
