:Your young black rat snake should do well on appropriate sized mice. With a little work, it should take them dead, which eliminates the chance of the snake being bitten & scarred during feeding, & gives you the opportunity to get a quantity discount on mice & freeze what you do not use immediately. As the snake grows, it will lose the pattern, becoming basically black, with flecks of white. A large black rat can exceed seven feet.
