Tiny snakes in Mobile AL

I was cleaning out a flower bed yesterday when I saw several small snakes. (I think!) Possibly somekind of newt, which as far as I am concerned is a snake with legs. The flower bed was full of dead leaves and pine stuff. They blended with the leaves/pine very well, brownish gray, black line down the sides. Less than 6 in long. I thought the head looked triangular. I saw at least 4, so I am worried about some kind of nest. I didn't stick around long enough to inspect them closely.

Need to know if I should worry. This was just a couple of feet from my kids sandbox. My name says it all -
