Echis behavior

In the past years, I have frequently noticed a strange behavior of my Echis: seemingly healthy animals apparently pump fluid into their heads, which makes them look swollen like with a bad toothache. Strangely, this behavior is restricted to female snakes, and doesn't seem to impair them in any way; they eat well and even breed. Anyone out there with an idea?
