:I am sharing a bathtub with snake scales
:and there are shed skins in my laundry
:the pillowcases on my bed are the ones with holes.
:There is a logic to this only snake keepers understand.
:In a pinch, my cereal bowl holds water for frogs
:and once eight newborn vipers, perfect and tiny.
:My clothes are old, and full of mud. The only jewels I have
:twine in bright, living coils. I am content.
:There is no room or table here where serpents have not gone.
:My towels to wrap a shedding vine snake in,
:my sheets a shade drape for cobras;
:my bedroom rattles and rustles with boomslangs at night.
:Still I am not sorry. My jewels are better
:and brighter than dead stones bought from stores,
:and their polished scales like mirrors
:turn to reflect a living smile.
