Copperheads are a decent first hot, speaking from experience. These were the first thing I "kept". I was 9 and they were in the backyard and . . . then we moved them to a neighbors house and parked them under the bed in a container . . . and yeah, we were really stupid but no one got bit. I would second the notion of finding something local. Sometimes the idea of keeping hots is more "glorious" than actually doing it.
