i feel a local venomous is a great start. like a local rattler because local species tend to have plenty of anti venom on hand just in case, and your doctors will be more familar on how to administer it. also the money you would have beeen spending on a exotic can be invested in good hooks and proper caging and supplies, if you get bord or figure this hobbie is not for you you can release the local animal to whare you got it without bothering shipping or anything real troublesom.
just an option i started with local buzzers and still love them and respect them.
