Hey Dean, good to see you over here (I just occasionally lurk around the venom forum). Our facility does keep antivenin as well as an extensive emergency plan in place (we even do annual drills with our local fire department and paramedics). Unfortunately, you will find that many private keepers do NOT keep antivenin nor do they have a satisfactory emergency plan in place (they just assume that the nearest hospital will know what to do....WRONG!). It is my opinion that if you are unable to keep antivenin for the species you are keeping (if available) then you shouldn't own them....so I guess that eliminates 95+% of hot herp owners. The only exception is if the local hospital is aware that someone keeps hots without their own AV supply and are okay with it (doubtful but possible). At the very least, realizing how hard it is go get AV and how expensive it is, one should have a detailed emergency plan that includes making the hospital aware of what you keep (realize, many hospitals don't keep AV due to the high cost and the fact that these hospitals may be in areas where there are no naturally occurring venomous herps).

:Just curious, of those of you working with hots, how many of you have your own anti-serum and / or a real plan of action in place
:if you get nailed?

:I used to keep hots, and have decided not to...beacuse I feared the public outcry that could happen if I got bit...or...god forbid I had an escape that ended up biting someone else.

:I DO believe that we should have the right to keep hots...but I believe that those of us who do should have the presence of mind to have our own serium for every hot snake we keep and of course to have a hell of a good method to prevent escapes.

:My fear is the one day a death from a hot bite is going to be the fuel that groups like the Humane Society needs to get ALL SNAKES BANNED in the private sector.

:So...do you have your own serum? a Plan?
:THoughts on this?
