Hey Jim-
This one I can help you with. It's called gazania rigens, commonly known as the "treasure flower". It's grown most often as an annual in the U.S. and it does tolerate drought and heat quite well(funny,sounds like a certain lizard I know!)and the blooms will only open if the sun is out. It is a member of the daisy family.
Boy, your guy's really going to town on that bloom. Isn't it a riot to see them go nuts for something? Yesterday Travis yanked a dandelion out of my hand and WHOOSH! he was gone under his hide and the weed was never to be seen again.
