WESTERN DAILY PRESS (Bath, UK) 08 May 03 Rescue By Toad Haul Almost 800 toads, frogs and newts were saved from being squashed beneath the wheels of cars on a road near Bath this year, it was announced yesterday. Charlcombe Lane used to become the site of a toad massacre each Spring when the amphibians made use of the road as their favourite crossing point. But this year volunteers carried 619 toads, 94 frogs and 66 newts to the safety of their breeding grounds in neighbouring fields. The road was closed to traffic from February 10 to April 20 by the council, and as a result only 49 squashed toads were found, compared with 153 last spring. The measures are now set to be repeated every year.
