EASTWOOD ADVERTISER (UK) 25 September 02 Newts to get brand new home
They go by the name Triturus cristatus and are a distinguished lot.
It just needs one flash of their silver tails and everyone is aquiver.
Nature lovers want to admire the great crested newt. European laws have been specially written for them.
And as an Eastwood firm has just discovered, news of newts can be an expensive business.
But Microlise Business Computing is happy to fork out to arrange a new newt´s home.
This includes providing a ditch linking their present des res with their new base.
There will also be a marshy area and banks where newts love to forage.
The scheme was applauded by the Development Control Committee of Broxtowe Borough Council last week.
And there was praise for the thoughtful approach of Microlise, which is building a three storey HQ on Farrington Way.
Planning Director Peter Stone said: "The company have been very co-operative over the habitat plans.
"Under the newt plan, they will get a ditch between the new and existing pond. They will be able to move along it."
Greasley Coun Michael Brown said: "These people are excellent. They are a very responsible local employer and very willing to enter into this agreement."
Newts are extremely rare in Notts and only about 15 have been seen on this site.
It is illegal to handle them unless you have a licence - and people could be jailed for hurting one.
The male grows about 6 ins long and has a jagged crest from head to tail. It has a silver striped tail.
Females are more modest.
They have no tail crest and don´t go in for tail adornments.
