CRAVEN HERALD (UK) 08 August 02 Ashley is reunited with her pet snake
A three-year-old girl has been reunited with her pet snake Mushu after it escaped from its tank a week ago.
The snake, nicknamed Houdini, managed to manoeuvre two logs placed in the cage to make a ramp and then escaped through the back door of the family's Byron Street home.
Mushu, which the owners believe is a corn snake, was found by children in an adjacent road and taken to the police station.
Ashley Richardson was delighted to see the return of her friend, and mum Patricia has now placed a weight on the tank to ensure it there is no recurrence.
But the great escapologist may be in good company.
A police spokesman said she had received an alarming number of calls after appeals were made for the owner to come forward.
"We had about half a dozen calls from members of the public all reporting snakes missing, which to be honest, was rather alarming," she said.
"I was worried to hear that there could be so many owners who did not know where there snakes were."
