THE SCOTSMAN (Edinburgh, UK) 09 July 02 Frog mutation fear
Frog mutations seen around the world have been caused by a combination of pesticide pollution and parasite infection, scientists said yesterday.
The limb deformities seen across the US and Canada as well as several other countries, have raised fears of an environmental threat both to wildlife and humans. Chemical contamination and infection by parasitic flatworms called trematodes have both been blamed for the amphibian disaster.
But new research from Pennsylvania State University indicates that both problems acting together are responsible for causing frogs to miss limbs or grow extra ones.
