SHROPSHIRE STAR (Telford, UK) 05 July 02 Special subway will suit the newt
Subways have been built as part of a new housing development for the elderly in Oswestry to help the most vulnerable to cross the road.
But the special underground tunnels have not been built for human residents, but for the local newt population.
The Great Crested Newt is a well known occupant of the Harlech Road area of Oswestry.
So when the North Cheshire Housing Association built the Harlech Court scheme, it had to take account of the newts' habitat and well-being.
A spokesman for the housing association said that the nature reserve and pond, specifically designed for the preservation of the Great Crested Newt, was across the road from the development.
"Our scheme provides ponds and an environment to encourage newts to re-settle back onto the site. This includes access from the conservation area by way of tunnels under the road as well as barriers to ensure the newts do not cross the road."
