You realize, of course, that Big Bend NP is about as far from Dallas as Dallas is from Pensacola, FL (or Miami to Pensacola if you want a Floridian reference). It isn't a short drive. Of course you can get into the Trans-pecos region and its incredible herps within about 350 miles of the DFW area.

As for herps in the area, check out Terry Hibbits great Herps of the DFW area web site here on KS.com (click the Care Sheets/FAQ/Features link under the title bar for any kingsnake.com page).
