the yellow mud turtle's ninth scute from the head is triangular. it is a square scute in the eastern. at least thats from all the specimans ive had to key out in the collection here.

r

: : : In east TX, it looks like a subrubrum.

: : : Further west, it could be a Yellow-bellied Mud (although it doesn't really look like one to me).

: : After yall got me pointed in the right direction I looked up the Yellow and the Eastern Mud turtle. According to the Texas Herp pages mine shold be an Eastern as Fannin county where it was found doesn't have any Yellows and does have the Eastern. Course it's not far (about 50 miles) to the Yellow area but this turtle's plastron is darker than all of the Yellow's I saw. The pictures are pretty accurate to it's color.
: : It is very shy and I'll be returning it to the wild but a little farther from any roads.:-))
