If everyone kept the turtles they found because of survival odds there would be no more wild offspring due to the fact there are no more wild turtles.
Most turtles have a super high mortality rate (some as high as 99%) as hatchings, but until humans started to collect them and run them over with cars they never had a problem maintaining wild numbers.
Point is- that turtle could have been one of the lucky ones that beat the odds and produced more offspring 10 years down the road.
But will never know.
