you could also use betadine diluted to the color of weak tea. I used to use this every week or two on my own aquatics.
Although at one point, I just realized "why am I doing this?" and found I had no answer besides "they look cleaner". I found out algae isn't hurting them, so I stopped bothering. I've never caught an aquatic turtle besides hatchlings that didn't have algae growin on it. Betadine, novalsan, salt and vinegar will do no harm to your turtle if you avoid the eyes, so if you want the clean shell to look at for your sake, use those. If you were thinking it was good for the turtle, don't bother, it's not good or bad for them (maybe a tad stressful if they are skittish turtles).
