How does everyone feel about mixing species??

I bring this up because on a lot of the other forums mixing species is considered a sin. I myself don't really feel comfortable doing it although I have in the past for animals from the same geographic area (painted and musk from a lake in my area). I know I dissagree with it when it comes to mixing things like N.A. Wood and Central American Wood turtles or Red eared sliders with African mud turtles and such. What are your thoughts on the subject?
