Hi! My parents live in Lower Burrell, and it doesn't surprise me that turtles haven't been seen in some time there - because of the urban/suburban build up, I would not be surprised if they had been extirpated from the area.
Unless you live adjacent to a wooded area, I am not sure that making a backyard habitat would work... But if you do, a big backyard pond with lots of plants, would do the trick.
As for looking for turtles on nature walks, try out at the lake at Northmoreland Park for water turtles. Box turtles are harder to find...
Maybe one of our turtle "experts" can offer some more information...

: Hi i live in Western PA in Lower Burrell/New Kensington area. I have noticed that the last 6-7 years i have not seen a turtle of any kind dead or alive. I wondered if anyone knew the reason why or knows how to attract them back into the area. I don't want one as a pet i just want some to see when i go on a nature walk in my woods. Is there any food, shelter, bedding i could get to bring the population my way? If you know of any way to attract them or do anything to help them come back please post a message or email me at mo8kline@hotmail.com thanks
