The picnic is scheduled for Sat. July 21 in Pavillion 6 at Raccoon Creek State Park. It should start around 10AM. The naturalist said that there are snapping turtles, amphibians, and snakes including copperheads in the less developed areas of the park, which is where Pavillion 6 is located. It contains a
fireplace, charcoal grills, etc. He says that animals can be seen in the Wildflower Reserve, where the Environmental Center is located. Also there are 2 creeks, Raccoon Creek and Traverse Creek, a 100-acre lake and, 2-3 miles above that, a 4-5 acre lake and wetland trail. The park contains 7300 acres.
Thanks to Denes Finnegan for arranging the picnic...
I also wanted to let people know that there is a neat area just outside the park, near the park office, that is a natural mineral spring. There is a waterfall, cave-like splash basin, and 2 nice trails leading to it. There are also some ruins nearby, it used to be a "spa" around 100+ years ago, where people came to take the waters.
I hope members will come out to enjoy the day!
