What I did was get a home-use ultrasonic humidifier, a couple of PVC pipes and connectors, and a digital timer and hook it up like this:

The digital timer is important because it lets you set it to go off for just a few minutes a couple times a day.
It's fully automatic and the water resevoir is big enough so that you can go away for a couple of days without problems.
And also, this cost less than $45. The humidifier was $20 (thanks to a rebate -this month- from walgreens), the timer was around $19, and the pipe cost a couple of dollars.
