have you tried handeling it in the day .ihave 3 cooks tree boas which are about a year old which you can pick up in the day but a bit iffy at night .i find if i go strait into the tank and grab them or hold my hands together (making them look bigger)they dont strik .i keep them on mulch and have had no problems whatsoever.i also have chondros which where a bit nippy but now with loads of handling are dog tame .good luck
