need advice on small tortoises

I looking for a small sized tortoise that requires basic husbandry skills. This will be my sons first pet and I want it to be a rewarding experience for the tortoise as well as for my son and I. I had turtles when I was young. Trying to get back into it. Is there any specific species that has a mild temperment, yet will be interesting to stimulate my son. thank you in advance
