::I would like to know your opinions on the best small starter tortoise. I do like russians but I know they are rarely captive bred. Are there any other torts that are captive bred more but look simmilar to russians (I don't like pancake tortoise's look with the flat shell and all.)?
:I would suggest a CB T. hermanni, (Hermann's Tortoise) they stay fairly small, are very attractive, and are among the hardier tortoises. Most CB T. graeca (Greek Tortoises) are T. graeca ibera from Turkey and would also be a good choice. Both of these species are fairly easily kept, quite hardy and if CB generally fairly trouble free.
:If you are looking for something that does not hibernate I would suggest a smaller variety of redfoot tortoise - a cherry head. A bit tougher to find a CB one but an excellent choice as well.
:I should point put that there are some people breeding Russians (T. horsfieldsii) and if you spend some time looking you should be able to find one.
:We have care sheets for all these species at the site below
