Grown lines--how do you know what's normal...

And what's pyramiding? Beau has white growth lines in between all his scutes yet it seems like he is only growing the black lines, not the light brown spaces. I don't know whether to be concerned. If it is pyramiding, I don't know what I'm doing wrong :(
