THE LEDGER (Lakeland, Florida) 29 April 03 Natural Facts From the Miscellaneous File {Excerpts}
Every so often I go through my files and find odd pieces of strange information that might -- or might not -- be valuable to others. Spring cleaning netted these bits. …
A Climbing Tortoise
One herpetologist (someone who studies turtles among other reptiles and amphibians) keeps his different tortoises in separate enclosures. Now if you have ever tried to rescue a turtle that is insisting on crossing a busy highway with no immediate water in the distance, you know how persistent and stubborn these creatures can be.
He tells of one of his tortoises that he found several times in the wrong pen, so he decided to watch. What he saw was a turtle acting like a rock climber faced with a shear wall of rock By alternately pushing and bracing herself, she was finally able to launch herself into her neighbors' pen.
Why she insisted on tackling this difficult task is unknown. Maybe because the wall was there?
