A female who is ready to lay will often start pacing back and forth and literally try to climb the walls. She may be aggressive towards other tortoises, fighting with males and attempting to mount other females.
On the other hand, a female who laid last week exhibited none of these behaviors until after laying.
With my group it appears that there is about a 4 week gap between a successful mating and egg laying.
I'd give at least 6-8" of sand and dirt mixture for laying. The nests I've seen have not been that deep, but provide a few extra inches just to be safe.
