This topic has been a common topic over the years. The fact that it has reached the popular thinking might have something to do with the article.
As far as old turtles/tortoises becoming less viable with age...
You've been hanging around in the wrong circles. Many people that have been working with tortoises over the years believe that it would be the 'middle aged/older' tortoises that were the most productive.
