My wife calls me and tells me a baby bird is dead in our backyard. It has flies around it and its too gross for her to pick up. I tell her I'll take care of it when I get home. She asked me if I had seen a nest or any ideas where it may have come from. I told her my best guess is Lola (my 12" sulcata) probably was out in the backyard hunting. She laughed.
7 hours later...
I get out of a meeting and hear a frantic message on my phone. "The torotise is eating the bird!" My wife went outside and Lola had eaten the bird WHOLE and only its legs were hanging out of her mouth. My wife tried to get her to release it, and she pulled even harder (we play tug of war with veg. and greens) The tortoise won and downed the entire baby bird, meanwhile my wife is vomiting.
2 hours later...
I get home, there are some very nasty droppings around the yard, and Lola is out basking. I called my herp vet, and he seemed surprised but not concerned. He just said make sure she is continuing to pass her droppings. He said they eat all sorts of things in the wild.
It's a day later Lola seems fine. I'm a little worried, and my wife is REALLY grossed out. Lola eats like a queen, assorted grasses, and veggies, some treats, (of course her poop) and 1/2 acre of secured tortoise grazing land all for her. She eats great, always seems content. I guess everyone strays from their diet. My little girl the great hunter.
have you ever heard of such a thing?
She said it tasted like chicken. lol
