I agree with Ed. Among the three different Pyxis arachnoides subspecies, there is very little to go by when they are small. (even when they are larger) We could argue that the three are not worthy of subspecific designation and I'm not sure which side of the fence I'd be on. For the time being though I'm sticking with the differences that I can identify between the adults (development of plastral hinge, plastral markings, etc.) At least until something better comes along. I have a journal article that addresses the phylogenetic development of the Madagascan tortoises but I don't remember if it splits the 4 Pyxis or not. If I can dig it up I'll post a followup...
