I live in St. Louis, MO. The spring here has been fairly cold and wet compared to the last two springs. I kept the male away from the females until about 2-3 weeks ago. Last year I put the male and females in late Feb and one female produced eggs in late March. That first batch produced my only hatchling.

And no, she gave me no sign, physical or otherwise, that she was gravid.

The other female had been very restless and climbing the walls when indoors, which indicated to me she might be gravid, but the one who laid the eggs today was very calm until she produced the 4 eggs.

Afterwards she started pacing, had a small fight with the male, and then created a shallow nest which she filled in with dirt but no more eggs.

It could be that there are physical markers of being gravid, but I haven't noticed any.
