Hey Chris, I'd get a lid just to be on safe side.You can also put a heat lamp on it.I've had my paraguay b/w a few weeks now and I can't get him to bite or slash his tail(pretty mellow).I've been feeding him fuzzie mice and catfood.I think it's more important to have something for them borrow in than climb.Goodluck, Steve
