I'm guessing where the discrepancy is in that Bert is probably talking about air temperature and shad is talking about surface temp. It's like if you go out on a hot day you'll find the temp on a tar road surface in the sun will be much hotter then that tar road in the shade. Bert raises his outside so he is usually worried about air temp I'm guessing. Some people put the surface temp below the basking site at 140 and have no problems. I put mine at 120 or more and they stay there for 10 mins then move off to the side alittle when they're warm enuff.
