Spoke to a museum curator today.
He wasn't flash on Hoser's descriptions in terms of the detail but reckoned they were all spot on in terms of the ICZN's rules and must therefore be used ... grudgingly.
He said that Hoser was right in naming the black ones a new species as the brown ones were topotypic(?) - in answer to Well's query above.
The curator who'se name I'll spare from the wrath of WW et. al, also had some pretty nasty things to say about him - I think they fell out a while back, but to save the peace I'll keep the adverse comments about W Wuster off the list.
But on related stuff he had a go at Wuster allegedly suppressing data that a colleague of his had that showed Hoser's Pailsus genus to be validly assigned to a radically different new taxa.
BTW is there any news on the promised peer reviewed piece by David Williams that was supposed to be in print by end 1998 critical of Hoser's new genus and species Pailsii?
